In Battle Creek, MI a medical firm is closing its doors after refusing to pay ransom and all of its files, AP/AR, database of patient information were all destroyed by cyber criminals. The ransom demand was $6500. Several other firms were hit with the attack and paid the ransom. While the FBI no longer recommends paying the ransom, if you are stuck it maybe the only option you have.
I have mentioned this before that your business shouldn't be vulnerable to ransomware attacks if your IT service provider is doing a few BASIC steps. Last resort is having great back-ups if your systems aren't hardened against ransomware.
